The mushers keep track of there dogs with two things, a microchip and a collar tag. The microchip has a code of numbers so if the musher drops off a dog they can find the dog after the Iditarod. The collar tag does the same thing. The very first Iditarod ever was in 1473 and the average dog team is 16 dogs. [LD]
